HEY LOCO FANS – Austin, Texas guitarist, singer, and songwriter Gary Clark Jr. was born February 15, 1984. He is widely regarded as one of the most important modern blues artists of his generation. Blending blues, rock, soul, funk, and hip-hop, Clark has helped push the blues into the 21st century without losing its grit or fire.

Born and raised in Austin, Clark began playing guitar at age 12 and came up through the city’s club scene. A turning point came when he caught the attention of Antone’s Nightclub founder Clifford Antone, whose mentorship placed Clark in the lineage of Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan. He soon shared stages with legends including Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Tom Petty, and the Rolling Stones.

Clark signed with Warner Bros. Records in 2011 and released The Bright Lights EP, followed by his major-label debut Blak and Blu (2012). His next albums, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim (2015) and This Land (2019), expanded his sound and sharpened his social commentary. The title track “This Land” earned Clark Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance, while the album itself won Best Contemporary Blues Album.

In 2024, Clark released JPEG RAW, a bold, genre-blurring record featuring collaborators such as Stevie Wonder, George Clinton, Valerie June, and Nas. The album was praised for its raw production, political edge, and fearless experimentation, reinforcing Clark’s role as a restless innovator.

A prolific collaborator, Clark has worked with artists ranging from Alicia Keys and Foo Fighters to Childish Gambino, Tom Morello, Bun B, and Leon Bridges. His live reputation remains formidable, documented on Gary Clark Jr. Live (2014) and Live/North America (2017).

Now a multiple Grammy Award winner, Gary Clark Jr. stands as a bridge between blues tradition and modern Black American music, proving the blues is not a museum piece, but a living, evolving force.
